Pubwatch RushmoorRushmoor Pubwatch

A local PubWatch schemes has been set up between licensed premises in Rushmoor to combat violence and other criminal activity. Its key aim is to promote a safe, secure drinking environment in all licensed premises to help to reduce alcohol related crime. It also provides better communication between licensees and the police and provides a forum for the discussion and solution of problems relating to violence in and around licensed premises.

The object of this is to reduce criminal conduct in licensed premises, to notify other licensees of potential problems and to provide an information and support network for landlords and their staff.

A lot has been achieved since January 2006 with 20 persons now banned, and we are particularly pleased that nearly 60 licensed premises in Rushmoor are active members including the previous Licensed Victuallers Association.

The scheme is about excluding the small minority who cause problems. Persons have been banned for suspected drug dealing, violence and criminal damage. Those who abuse staff face bans as well. This is a civil not a criminal process.

The joint agreement to severely restrict drink promotions, and to move towards plastic glasses in Aldershot is particularly welcome. Early signs are that more serious assaults are down, and that the scheme is proving a powerful deterrent against potential troublemakers.

Together crime and the fear of crime are being addressed by teamwork and sensible management. We hope Pubwatch can go from strength to strength.

The next PubWatch meeting will be held at 2.30pm on Wednesday, May 2 2007 at Vox (previously Cheeks) in Station Road, Aldershot.
