Seasonal Community Safety Advice
Celebrate safely this Eid ul-Fitr
Eid ul-Fitr often abbreviated as simply Eid, is an Islamic holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. This year’s celebrations fall upon 23 October. Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service would like to wish everyone who is taking part in the festivities a happy and above all a safe celebration.
Watch Manager Paul Christopher says: "During the Eid Ul-Fitr period people spend more time at home or at the mosque, and whilst people are relaxing with friends and family, everyday fire risks can increase. People are more likely to be distracted and therefore vulnerable to accidental fires.
By taking a few simple steps fire risks can be reduced around the home and everybody can celebrate the Festival of Eid Ul-Fitr safely".
- You should always fit a working smoke alarm on each floor level of your home. If you are buying a new smoke alarm consider a 10-year alarm which will require less frequent battery changes. But don't forget that all types of alarms need to be tested once a week.
- You should never leave cooking unattended. When cooking deep-fried food, dry it before you put it in the hot oil. Never fill the pan more than one third full of oil. If the oil starts to smoke, turn off the heat and leave the pan to cool. Never throw water over the pan.
- When cooking, take great care with long hair and clothing. Both are very flammable.
- Make sure that you put out candles and cigarettes properly.
